The paths of Leopoldine Hofmann and Archduke Heinrich, son of Archduke Rainer (who introduced the tradition of the Bolzano Flower Market on 1 May), cross.
Leopoldine is a singer at the Graz Opera.
Her stage presence delights the audience and also enchants a high visitor to the opera, Archduke Heinrich. The lovers morganatically give each other their wedding vows. Empress Sissi gives them the ginkgo tree in the palace as a wedding gift. Heinrich loses his rank and possessions before Emperor Franz Josef II reinstates him in the imperial family after the birth of their daughter Maria Raineria and nobilises Leopoldine as Freifrau von Waidek. They live happily in Bolzano. Their deaths are as touching as their enduring love: within one night they die of pneumonia in Vienna in 1891.
Leopoldine is the great-great-grandmother of the current owner of Palais Campofranco Georg Graf Kuenburg.
