Presentation of the book "La Russia contemporanea" by Giovanna Cigliano (in Italian), published by Cartocci Editori

The collapse of communism and the dissolution of the USSR have made new documentary materials accessible to scholars and prompted a reinterpretation of Russian history between the 19th and 20th centuries. The analysis of the contradictions inherent in the Bolshevik regime is accompanied by the appreciation of the imperial dimension of the Tsarist and Soviet experience. Utilizing recent historiographical findings, the book retraces the key stages of a story whose understanding is essential for comprehending the contemporary world: from the abolition of serfdom to industrialization, from the age of revolutions to Stalinism, from the crisis of the Soviet Union to Vladimir Putin's Russian Federation. This new edition, revised and expanded with a chapter dedicated to Russian emigration in the 1920s and 1930s, updates the treatment of the post-Soviet period. In light of the stabilization that occurred in the first decade of the 21st century, it becomes possible to draw a provisional assessment of this historical phase, marked by a peculiar blend of authoritarianism and democracy and the affirmation of a new international role for Russia in the multipolar world.
