Francis of Assisi meets the Sultan of Egypt: a scenic action about the courage of dialogue and encounter across the boundaries of faith and culture.

In 1219, at the height of the Fifth Crusade, Francis of Assisi performs a revolutionary act: he crosses enemy lines to meet the Sultan of Egypt, al-Malik al-Kamil, in a tent on the banks of the Nile. The Mad Saint is a scenic action for actress, baritone, bass, strings, mixed choir and percussion, with a text by Guido Barbieri and music by Marcello Fera. The story is told through the eyes of Jacopa de' Settesoli, a Roman noblewoman and close friend of Francis, on the day of his death, 3 October 1226. Through her monologue in seven scenes, the protagonists of that extraordinary encounter come to life: Francis and the Sultan confront the theological distances that separate them, searching together for a path of dialogue and mutual respect. Performed by the Conductus Ensemble and the Gruppo Vocale Heinrich Schütz, conducted by Marcello Fera.
