Content:
The opera is set in a convent at the end of the 17th century. Sister Angelica comes from an aristocratic family. Years ago she was forced into a convent after giving birth to an illegitimate child. Since then she has not heard from her child or from her family.
All the sisters of the convent have gathered for evening prayer. Sister Angelica says that it was not the dead who had wishes, but the living. A sister reports that she saw a carriage in front of the convent. It is the carriage of the Princess, Angelica's aunt, who comes to settle the inheritance matters of Angelica's deceased parents with her niece. The Princess repeats the reproaches that Angelica's family has always made to the daughter. Angelica inquires about her child. Hesitantly, the princess replies that the child had long suffered from a serious illness. Angelica breaks down believing that her child is dead. With her last strength she signs the document, the renunciation of her inheritance. The tragedy takes its course.

A profound story, clothed in grandiose music by Puccini.
