Seeds World
Organizer: Gärtnerei SchullianIt all began with the sickle, says southern German landscape architect Wolfgang Hundbiss. The sickle goes back to the Stone Age. Among other things, today's grafting knives were created from this. From February 25 to March 11, 2023, the Swabian curator and collector will be exhibiting some of his now 8,000 gardening tools in Glass House III of the Schullian nursery as part of the special exhibition “SamenWelten – UniversoSementi” and telling the story of seeds. Wolfgang Hundbiss shows classic seed packets, mousetraps from the last century, old advertising posters, exotic-looking preservation devices, spades and claws. The exhibition curator is a co-founder of the Museum für Gartenkultur in Illertissen in the Bavarian-Swabian district of Neu-Ulm.
Seed breeding and seed propagation have a long tradition. Around 13,000 years ago, people started growing seeds. They selected the best from edible wild plants, domesticated and modified them, became sedentary and were able to feed the growing population. The size and weight of seeds vary greatly, health and varietal purity play an important role. If seed is stored in a cool and dry place, it retains its germination and vigor for many years.
The special exhibition in Glass House III of the Schullian nursery shows how the breeding and sale of seeds has developed over the past century. The glass house III stands at the beginning of the history of the nursery and tells the history of gardening in South Tyrol in a permanent exhibition. The special exhibition "SamenWelten - UniversoSementi" shows tools for sowing, watering, cutting or planting, including groove pullers, weeding claws, crumb rakes, spades, seed spreaders and watering cans, as well as advertising documents and means of communication from the past century. The special exhibition will open on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in the Schullian nursery in Bozen in the presence of the curator and will remain accessible until March 11 during the nursery’s opening hours. Admission is free.
