Sacred Concert of Duke Ellington
Sacred Concert by Duke Ellington and Gospels in South Tyrol
When the Afro-American jazz pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington were asked to perform together with his famous Big Band in the “white” Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, he was aware of his privileged position as a “people of color” who performed almost exclusively in front of white people , consciously. Ellington, who was close to Martin Luther King, used this opportunity to subtly point out the equality of all people and their right to freedom by emphasizing the common roots of faith with his composition of a Concert of Sacred Music for big band, choir and vocal soloists. So he planned a tap dancer perform in it with a reference to the Old Testament King David, who also broke with traditional views at the time with his dance in front of the Ark of the Covenant.
The JazzRockPop Choir and the Big Band of the Friedrich Alexander University from Bolzano's partnership city Erlangen would like to set an example with this concert in times of war, divisions in our democratic societies and increasing threats to minorities. - Music connects, and this concert aims to make this clear across borders.
The program is supplemented by some German and English gospel.
The entrance is free.
Free will offering
