Rivoltosi: May 27–28, 6 PM, Piazza Matteotti. A play on Gaismair & resistance. 500 years since Peasants’ War. Free entry.

On Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 May 2025, at 6:00 PM in Piazza Matteotti in Bolzano, the play Rivoltosi will be performed, dedicated to the historical figure of Michael Gaismair, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War in Tyrol. The script, written by Paolo Mosna, will be brought to the stage by the Teatro Werkstatt company.

We quote the introduction Paolo Mosna had written for the premiere before his passing:
Gramsci said that truth is revolutionary. But truth about one's own history is often hidden. The story of Michael Gaismair, one of the leaders of the 16th-century peasant uprisings, is largely unknown or distorted—like many stories where the oppressed challenged power. History is continuously revised and manipulated in favor of those in power, especially when it comes to social movements. In our current era of restoration, lies are widespread, and this results in a systematic distortion of the past—a disconnection from part of ourselves. Without knowing the past, we cannot understand the present. And in the face of today’s global crisis, we lack both the collective awareness and the tools for necessary change. Through this performance, I hope to shed light on hidden or misrepresented events, trusting in the participation of those willing to engage selflessly.

At 8:30 PM, also in Piazza Matteotti, another performance by Teatro Werkstatt will follow, dedicated to Lidia Menapace, a partisan and feminist. Marking 80 years since the Liberation on April 25, 1945, this piece highlights the essential, often silent role played by women and ordinary people. Liberation was a mass movement, woven from simple and courageous acts. Anti-fascism was a national and popular uprising—workers, students, teachers, artisans, peasants, intellectuals, men and women—united in a shared destiny that became a democratic republic. This lesson is worth remembering to understand what has been—and what may yet return.
