In "Cinquecento anni di rabbia," Francesco Filippi discusses a fascinating thesis: there is a close relationship between uprisings and means of communication from the 16th century to today, and without a doubt, what we are witnessing in these years is a revolution, in which we are the protagonists. Never before have we needed to make good use of history to better understand the world we live in.

In the 16th century, the invention of Gutenberg – the printing press with movable type – was the unconscious engine of a revolution. The widespread distribution of printed sheets using the new, inexpensive technology brought those who had never had access to power to the realization of common issues for the first time. The social anger that exploded from this took on a new, organized form, giving rise to the Peasants' War, which was finally suppressed in blood in 1525. From that moment, the world was never the same; from then on, power began to deal with the means of communication to control them and render them harmless. Five centuries later – in our time – something very similar has happened. On January 6, 2021, the dream of the "world's greatest democracy" shockingly wavered. An enraged crowd, mostly composed of white men, stormed the U.S. Capitol on Capitol Hill. The popular anger of that day was channeled and organized by social media. In both cases, a new communication medium, which had escaped the filters of power, brought to the surface the anger of those who feel excluded from the dominant narrative.
