Synopsis “I CUSTODI DEI CONFINI™” - “DIE HÜTER DER GRENZEN”
Walking from the Carnic Ridge between Cadore Veneto and Austrian East Tyrol to the passes that divide Belluno area from South Tyrol in Sesto Dolomites, I questioned myself on the meaning of the term "borders". No longer “dividing lines”, but meeting and exchange points of ethnolinguistic, ethnosacral and ethnopolitical "alterities" defined by the tragic legacy of the anti-utopia of nationalisms. Languages, customs, religion, regional or state membership must actually be seen as peculiarities and wealth brought as a dowry by populations that live in contact. "Border" huts and their managers witness the change from being "guardians" to becoming "keepers" of an area of new European identities. Along the imaginary line that we follow on our path, we carefully restudy history before rethinking the concepts of “border” and “identity” to forget the anti-utopia offered by the concepts of nations and nationalism, there are numerous peculiar linguistic communities that allow us to re-evaluate the concept of language and dialect: from the Tilga of Obertilliach, a local dialect presumably deriving from movements of human groups from Silesia still to be studied in depth, to the Kartitsch variant of East Tyrol, to move to the Upper Pusterese, or the variant of Sesto of the South Tyrolean. So much for the local variants of Tyrolean, for some German dialect, for others a minority language with various facets. The same applies to the "dialects" spoken on the other side, namely the Comelean and the Ladin spoken in Comelico, both variants of the Ladin Dolomitan spoken in the Cadore area, as well as the Cadore spoken in Auronzo. All the "local languages" listed above are the heritage of Tyroleans, South Tyroleans, Comelicans (Comelians) and Cadores, whose state belonging to Austria and Italy is clear, while their cultural and linguistic identity is totally to be rethought starting from a shared fund of common history in which multilingualism was a factor of enrichment and not of division.
