Tribute to Flavio Faganello with 100+ photos showing mountain life, culture, and walking. Guided tours by appointment.

Twenty years after his death, the Office for Film and Media of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, the "UMSt – Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and Activities" of the Autonomous Province of Trento, and the "Trento Film Festival" pay tribute to photographer Flavio Faganello with a joint exhibition. Hosted at the Merkantilmuseum in Bolzano, the exhibition features over one hundred of his impressive photographs and highlights the creative and artistic vision of the Trentino photographer, a vision closely linked to the practice of walking.

Even in his time, Faganello addressed themes that remain relevant today. His photos invite all lovers of walking, slow and sustainable tourism to rediscover the paths and communities of a bygone world. Faganello’s exceptional archive, now divided between his family, the Autonomous Province of Trento, and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, comes together again in this exhibition. The selected photographs document the major ecological and anthropological changes in Trentino and South Tyrol during the years of the economic boom and tourism expansion.

The expressive images recall the close connection between the landscapes and the life of mountain farmers, their cultural heritage, and spirituality. Along the old paths with crosses, fences, votive shrines, and dry stone walls, Faganello captures the hard work, coexistence, and special relationship between people and sacred places. He documents rituals, customs, faith, and hopes of the pilgrims. By repeatedly returning to the same places and people, he manages, with his typical ironic style, to highlight the contradictions of the time, also addressing the issue of tourist invasion and environmental risks.

In South Tyrol, Faganello is best known for his book The Children of Solitude, in which he photographically documented the life of mountain farmers.
