A musical journey through early Baroque Italy: Anita Rosati, Johanna Zachhuber and Manuel Schuen perform sacred music of the 17th century.

With this programme, singers Anita Rosati and Johanna Zachhuber, accompanied by organist Manuel Schuen, embark on a musical journey through early Baroque Italy. The stops along this route – Naples, Rome, Milan and Venice – rank among the most important musical centres of the 17th century. Between sonic splendour, deep spirituality and expressive virtuosity, a rich panorama of sacred music from that era unfolds.

At the heart of the programme are compositions for two voices and historic organ, dedicated to the veneration of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Contemplative intimacy alternates with festive solemnity, while refined polyphony meets the new expressive style of the early Seicento. The music of this period aims to render emotions immediately audible, placing the text at the very centre of musical expression.

Works by Giovanni Felice Sances, Claudio Monteverdi, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, Francesca Caccini, Giovanni Paolo Cima and Girolamo Frescobaldi will be performed – all major composers of the early Baroque. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of Cozzolani and Caccini, two remarkable female musicians of the 17th century whose works bear eloquent witness to the importance of women's creativity in the music of the time.

Alongside the duets, the programme also includes solo pieces with organ accompaniment as well as solo organ works. The compositions of Salvatore, Frescobaldi and Cima open up independent soundscapes – from freely improvisatory toccatas to lively canzonas – showcasing the timbral variety of the historic Achamer/Wörle organ in the Church of St Stephen in Pinzolo. The instrument was enlarged in the 18th century by Ignaz Franz Wörle; certain parts are thought to originate from the workshop of the Tyrolean organ builder Sebastian Achamer.

The result is a programme that brings the spiritual and musical world of early Baroque Italy back to life – full of sonic splendour, emotional depth and meditative interiority.
