What happens when we mistake one possible future for the only one?

How we think about the future is not neutral. It is shaped, contested, and often captured by dominant actors, by unquestioned assumptions and narratives, and by the frameworks we inherit. Whether it is the reduction of climate futures to techno-fixes, or the equation of progress with economic growth, dominant narratives limit what we consider possible. Yet, the future is not fixed. It is actively shaped: through the approaches we choose, the institutions we build, and the spaces we create for collective deliberation and imagination.

The Futures Summit 2026 is grounded in the conviction that making this process more conscious, and open is a crucial task of our time. Over two days, leading researchers and practitioners come together to recognize how futures get captured, how we can expand them, and embed critical long-term thinking in governance and institutions.

  • Day 1 moves from diagnosis to possibility, examining how futures get captured and constrained, and exploring creative, sensory, and transformative ways of engaging with the future. The day closes with a fireside chat offering Italian and regional perspectives on the current state of futures theory and practice.
  • Day 2 turns to institutionalization: how new ways of thinking about the future become embedded in governance and policy, with perspectives from UNESCO, the European Commission, and national foresight processes. The summit closes with a spotlight on global and local tourism futures – set against the backdrop of a region where tourism serves as a living testbed for long-term transformation.
