About The Collegiate Church in San Candido

The Collegiate Church is located in the historical centre of San Candido in the high Val Pusteria valley.

The duke of Bavaria, Tassilo III, gave the abbot of the Benedictine convent of Scharnitz some land where a Benedictine monastery was to be built. The aim of this construction was to draw the population of San Candido closer to Christianity. At the time (XII and XIII centuries) the building was provided with a Collegiate Church which still is the most significant Romanesque witness to those days all over Tyrol.
It is a terrific building where the green roofs give the construction an extremely fascinating appearance. Among the artistic beauties that can be admired in this place a mention is worth to the late Romanesque frescos in the dome, the crucifixion group in the choir, the Romanesque crypt and a Gothic fresco.
