About Ambras Castle Innsbruck

The world's first museum!

Ambras Castle is one of the most beautiful sights in Tyrol and is formative for the European cultural heritage as the world's first museum. The princely sovereign of Tyrol, Archduke Ferdinand II (1529–1595), son of Emperor Ferdinand I, ordered that the mediaeval fortress at Ambras be turned into a magnificent Renaissance castle as a gift for his wife Philippine Welser. Ferdinand was one of history’s most prominent collectors of art. He accommodated his world-famous collections in a museum built specifically for that purpose. As the only Renaissance Kunstkammer of its kind to have been preserved at its original location, the Chamber of Art and Wonders represents an unrivalled cultural monument.

Spanish Hall, Armouries, Chamber of Art and Wonders, Habsburg Portrait Gallery, Strasser Glass Collection, Collection of Gothic Sculpture, Bathing Chambers of Philippine Welser, Chapel of St Nicholas.

Ambras Castle Innsbruck - part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in Tyrol - is a top international destination for art lovers due to its outstanding special exhibitions.
