About Appiano Castle

The Appiano castle is one of the most architecturally powerful structures of the entire region.

One of the most striking castles of South-Tyrol is situated far above the small village of Missiano. The Appiano castle dominates the Adige plain from a steep rocky face of the mountain. It was Ulrich III von Eppan’s intentions to convey power and unconquerability by building such an important castle. The majestic structure was built in the 12th century and presents not only details of the Medieval times but also Romanesque and late-gothic style renovations and expansions. After various restoration projects the castle is now one of the most important Romanesque buildings of South-Tyrol. The castle is of historical and artistic importance, it presents old frescos from the chapel. Dating back from the 12th century these highly artistic paintings reveal byzantine influence and are some of the most renowned European art-works of the Romanesque period. Covered by frescos from the following eras, they were only unveiled in 1926. In the woods behind the castle there is a historical archery itinerary. This antique sport is still practiced in a traditional way.
