In a confusing media landscape dominated by the male point of view and sectarianism, we discover the story of "Khabar Lahariya", the only newspaper in India run by Dalit women, the lowest caste in society. Armed with smartphones, Editor-in-Chief Meera and her female reporters defy the tradition that forces them to be silent and subservient, both on the front lines, where they report on the country's big issues, and in their own homes, where they redefine female emancipation in contemporary India. Writing with Fire is set in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, notorious for its corruption, violence against women and brutal oppression of minorities.
