Wilhelm Senoner. Persona

Wilhelm Senoner will reach the age of 76 in 2022. He has never left his home in Ortisei/Gröden for long periods of time. He grew up in a traditional sculpture studio. Here, the emphasis was on stylistically pure and qualitative repetition of historical models. Only gradually did he free himself from this formal constraint and found his own figures. In addition to the thematic exhibition illustrating theatre events in Tyrol, the reference to the "persona" seems to be purposeful. Senoner has been working since 1995 with figure models that resemble each other in attitude and form, which, apart from the characteristics of their sex, differ only insignificantly and give off a theatrical, form-archaic note.

Wilhelm Senoner's art also touches on the stereotype in the statement of the human. His gaze is directed at human qualities and characters. In the course of time, he places more and more emphasis on legibility. Thus the sculpture gains painterly qualities. The fact that, on the one hand, he refers to the rugged rock faces of his closer home with the roughly worked lime wood planks, or works canvases in such a way that all the colour message comes to rest on a relief ground, underlines his sculptural sensibility. Senoner himself was responsible for the selection of the objects shown, as well as their arrangement in the exhibition parcours. His view touches on the development of recent years.
