Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen: Magdalena, ma dai
Five hundred years ago, during the Tyrolean Peasants’ War, Michael Gaismair and like-minded companions fought for social justice and for the participation of the “common man” in political decision-making. Naturally, women also played a role in the fabric of these events: many of them, including Magdalena Gaismair, took part actively and behind the scenes in the uprisings. They were close confidantes of the fighters and contributed to the resistance by keeping everyday life running. At the same time, women in convents sought to protect their communities, resources, and thus their spaces for education and intellectual work. In the already relatively scarce sources from this period, women are hardly mentioned at all. For as early as the 16th century, what would later be repeated time and again already applied: in the struggle for freedom, equality, and “brotherhood,” women are often left with only one task — the laundry.
Director Michaela Senn and her team are developing a theatrical piece about the gaps in historical writing, the struggle for equality in everyday life, and the power of solidarity. The production interweaves the social struggles of the 16th century with the ever-recurring challenges of care work. At its center is caregiving — and the question of what revolutionary force it can unleash if we are willing to give it our attention, both in our closest relationships and on the political stage. The production is being created as part of the project “Mitmischen! Ma come?” of the municipality of Sterzing and is part of the Euregio Museum Year 2025.
