by Daniel Pennac adapted and directed by Giorgio Gallione with Giuseppe Cederna scenography Marcello Chiarenza assistant set designer Lorenza Gioberti lighting design Andrea Violato musical elaborations Paolo Silvestri sound engineer Giorgio Tedesco Storia di un corpo is a book, a novel, published by Feltrinelli, and was also briefly, some ten years ago, a play staged by Pennac himself reading in French, with visual subtitles in Italian. It is the intimate and 'physical' diary of a man and goes from his first conscious years of life (12 years old) until his death at the age of 87. Giorgio Gallione has made a reduction with a strictly theatrical rhythm, perfect for Giuseppe Cederna's performance. It is not a sentimental diary, but a physical one; it is a record, in essence, of the changes in the body, of its reactions to life over the years. The language, too, changes: although very carefully crafted, it is at first more acerbic, simple, then gradually becomes more complex, literary, analytical, sometimes funny, sometimes merciless, always a little shameless, uncensored. At times one laughs, especially at the period of adolescence characterised by the overwhelming discovery of sexuality, at others one is intrigued, at others one reflects on the transience of the physical: the description of the old, ruined, worn-out body is realistic to the point of cruelty. The diary of a body is the gift that the protagonist gives, post-mortem, to his daughter, Lison, the gift of those words that father and daughter usually never exchange.
