The beaver is back

Once widespread in central Europe and then extinct apart from small relict populations, the beaver is now making a comeback in Europe's riverscapes and also in South Tyrol. This is the topic of the conference that Eurac and the South Tyrolean Biodiversity Platform will hold on 13 March at the Museum of Nature.
Since the first evidence of a beaver in the Sexten basin in 2020, individual beavers have settled in the Little Drau. Reason enough to think about managing this conflict-laden species as soon as possible. However, the beaver not only has considerable conflict potential, but as an ecosystem engineer and umbrella species it is a holistic enrichment for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
In the conference 'The beaver is back, yay! Habitat and Conflict Potential, Current Developments and Management', organised by Eurac and the South Tyrolean Biodiversity Platform on Wednesday, 13 March at 6 p.m. at the Museum of Nature South Tyrol, wildlife biologist Davide Righetti will introduce the topic, talk about its presence on the East Tyrolean border and provide insights into the latest monitoring results. Ecologist and forestry expert Dominik Trenkwalder, on the other hand, will present the habitat availability and conflict potential of the species in South Tyrol and Tyrol, which he studied in detail as part of his dissertation. Admission is free.
