Jakob Spahn was born in Berlin. He discovered his passion for the cello as a boy after attending a performance of the 'Carnival of the Animals' at the Berlin Philharmonic. At the age of 7, he received his first lesson. He completed his studies with Prof. H.C. Schweiker in Aachen and at the 'Hanns Eisler' University of Music in Berlin with Prof. David Geringas and Prof. Claudio Bohorquez. He graduated as a soloist with distinction. He received further artistic impulses from master classes with Frans Helmerson, Bernard Greenhouse, Steven Isserlis and Yo Yo Ma.

He is the winner of numerous national and international competitions. At the 2010 ARD competition in Munich, he was awarded the special prize of the 'Alice Rosner Foundation'. As a scholarship holder of the German Music Competition, he was selected to participate in the 'Young Artists' Concerts'. The 'Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes' and the association 'Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now' are among his supporters. After two years at the 'Karajan Academy' with the Berlin Philharmonic, he was engaged in 2011 as solo cellist at the Munich State Opera.
