In New York, the German biogeneticist Eitan and the American Arabic student Wahida fall in love. Their different origins play no role for either of them. But when Eitan has his Jewish family travel from Berlin, his parents perceive their son's love for a Palestinian woman as a betrayal of their own history. In order to trace his historical and family heritage, Eitan, accompanied by Wahida, travels to his grandmother in Israel. There, an assassination catapults them into the brutal reality of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As Eitan lies seriously injured in hospital, Wahida forces his family to uncover a long-kept secret that reaches far back into the past. No one can escape the truth any longer. But for Wahida, too, her own origins suddenly become a challenge she cannot simply ignore. With his play "Birds", which premiered in Paris in 2017, the Lebanese-Canadian author and director Wajdi Mouawad has created one of the most successful contemporary dramas. A play about identities, historical burden and a love between the fronts.
