Sketches of Nature: The Exhibition

For several years, the group “Sketches of Nature – Natur zeichnen” has been meeting regularly at the South Tyrol Museum of Natural History to observe shells, plants, insects, birds, and other subjects, and to draw them using ink, pencil, or watercolors. A selection of their works will be on display in an exhibition starting March 3.

“Sketches of Nature” draws attention to the tradition of scientific drawing, which reproduces objects with great precision and can even reveal details that are only understandable through preparation and observation under a microscope. In this respect, drawing surpasses photography and computer graphics. Since this type of drawing requires a lot of practice and time, fewer and fewer of these drawings are being commissioned. Yet, each individual drawing has something unique. Through drawing, a natural object becomes a work of art; its structures remain imprinted in the viewer’s memory longer than those of computer graphics. These are compelling reasons for the Museum of Natural History to continue promoting life drawing.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday, March 3 to March 24 and will be officially presented on Friday, March 13 at 5:30 PM, together with the artists and the organizers.
