Ottavio Dantone
What drives a 20th century composer to compose a ballet to music by (or attributed to) Giovan Battista Pergolesi? It all started with a commission from Djagilev, the creator of those Russian Ballets that were all the rage in Paris. Djagilev expected a simple transcription that would satisfy the Parisians' exotic desire for antiquity, but Stravinsky saw in the 18th century an untapped source of vitality and immersed himself completely in Pergolesi's language, an encounter that revolutionised the history of music. The counterpoint to Stravinsky's Pulcinella is Haydn's Symphony No. 94, known as 'The Surprise' for its strong and unexpected contrasts. The pairing is no coincidence: if Romanticism was a long and complex confrontation with the gigantic figure of Beethoven, the 20th century saw in Haydn and Mozart above all the models that inspired it to find lightness and clarity of structure. Holding the strings of this comparison across the centuries is Ottavio Dantone, the new principal conductor of the Haydn Orchestra.
