The Natural Museum of South Tyrol is hosting a lecture exploring the often-overlooked impact of plant fungi on agriculture and food security.

Molecular biologist Sabine Öttl, head of the Institute for Plant Health at the Laimburg Research Centre, will explain how fungal diseases threaten crops and food supply chains, how plants and fungi interact, and what this means for agriculture in South Tyrol. The lecture will also address the broader effects of these processes on human life and the role of scientific research in this field.

The lecture is part of the exhibition "Funga – A Hidden World", on display until February 2027, which explores the remarkable kingdom of fungi: organisms that are neither plants nor animals, living largely out of sight as mycelium in the soil, supplying plants with water and nutrients and enabling life to take hold across countless habitats on Earth.

The lecture will be held in German and admission is free.
