Nitai Hershkovits: Piano Solo “Call on the old wise“
Pianist and composer Nitai Hershkovits has been labelled a prodigy by BBC Music. His dynamic style of playing crosses boundaries and genres with a light and elegant touch, conveying a wide range of emotions and deep contrasts.
Nitai is an exception as a musician in that he has done the opposite of what most musicians do: he studied jazz as a foundation and later approached classical music. This unique combination strengthens his eclectic style. He has been described as someone reminiscent of an old pianist with silky tones like the great Hank Jones, and he weaves bliss and melancholy with skilful freedom.
After five years in Avishai Cohen's trio (2011-2016), Nitai moved to New York and eventually landed with ECM, for whom he released his first solo album last November. He says of it: "It's like I'm playing with different musical eras at the same time, but in a kind of augmented reality. For me it's like a journey that takes you through different experiences in an instant. Like jumping through frames that contain different images or looking through windows into different worlds."
