Collegium Musicum Bruneck Choir
Bolzano String Academy
Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir (soprano),
Silvia Hauer (contralto),
Tuomas Katajala (tenor),
Arttu Kataja (bass),
Clau Scherrer (conductor)
Ludwig van Beethoven's Mass in C major aroused awe and wonder at its premiere in Eisenstadt on 13 September 1807. Prince Nikolaus von Esterhazy, who had commissioned the work for his wife's name-day, commented on the performance with the words: "But, dear Beethoven, what have you done again?". The prince's reaction clearly shows that Beethoven's work was a serious departure from the usual mass compositions of the time. Beethoven must have been aware of this distance from the conventional, because on 8 June 1808, he wrote to his publisher Breitkopf: 'Of my Mass, as of myself in general, I do not like to say anything, however I believe I have treated the text as it is still untreated'.
