"I superbi":

Piacenza, September 1545, the city welcomed its first Duke Pierluigi Farnese, who immediately caused resentment among the ruling class because he wanted to break away from the past, even though his father Alessandro, who had been elected Pope under the name of Paul III, had advised him to do so. Driven by his ambition to expand his duchy, Pierluigi also antagonized Emperor Charles V, who supported a conspiracy of local nobles aimed at deposing him by force.
Count Gianluigi Confalonieri was also asked to take part in the conspiracy, but his wife Elisabetta tried to dissuade him: Breaking the oath of allegiance to the duke would be an act of lesa maestà, punishable by damnatio memoriae. Despite his wife's warnings, Gianluigi embarks on an intrigue that is bigger than himself and very dangerous: the happiness of Ortensia, his beloved daughter, is also at stake. Elisabetta must take the reins of the family against her will to prevent them all from falling into the abyss.
