Hike on the Vinschgau Sonnenberg

Juval Castle: medieval fortress at the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley

The bus takes us through the Vinschgau Valley to Tschars, the starting point of our hike. From there, we first climb steeply up to the Tscharser Schnalswaal, an irrigation channel built in the first half of the 16th century. We then follow the trail eastwards against the flow of the water along trail marker no. 3, initially through deciduous woodland and later across open slopes, until we reach Juval Castle. Probably built in the 13th century, the castle is now owned by the Messner family. There will be an opportunity to stop for refreshments along the way.

For the return to Tschars, we first take an old cobbled path descending to the Stabener Schnalswaal. Following this, we return via quiet side roads to the village square of Tschars, where the bus awaits for the journey home.
