As part of Bücherwelten at the Waltherhaus, the publishing house franzLAB, in collaboration with Eurac Research and Literatur Lana, presents the recent publication Literatur & Wissen(schaft). The presentation, followed by a discussion with the editors, will take place on Monday, 26 January 2026 at 6:00 pm in the upper foyer of the Waltherhaus in Bolzano.

The volume, published by franzLAB at the end of 2025, explores the literary representation of the Alpine world, the Alps, and the Dolomites from a dual perspective: a historical “external” view and an internal view rooted in contemporary South Tyrolean literature. Across its 208 pages, the publication brings together texts, essays, and conversations by authors, linguists, scientists, and historians who challenge the prejudice that science merely provides data while literature serves only as entertainment. On the contrary, literature emerges as a fundamental catalyst—capable of stimulating scientific questions, opening new interpretative spaces, conveying knowledge, and making history a living experience.

Literatur & Wissen(schaft) was edited by Eurac Research and Literatur Lana, in collaboration with the South Tyrolean Authors’ Association (SAAV), on the occasion of an international workshop held at Eurac Research. The graphic design was created by Massimiliano Mariz (Studio typeklang, Bolzano), and the photographs are by Andreas Bertagnoll. The volume includes contributions, among others, by Oswald Egger, Sabine Gruber, Jarka Kubsova, Sepp Mall, Josef Oberhollenzer, Christine Vescoli, and many more.

What role do scientific knowledge and society’s experiential knowledge play in literary representations? And how can scientists benefit from literature? In dialogue with Kunigunde Weissenegger, co-founder of the publishing house franzLAB, the editors Thomas Streifeneder, Christine Vescoli, and Josef Prackwieser will discuss the constructive interaction between fiction and fact, poetic language and empirical observation. At the center of the conversation will be narratives that escape linear thinking and open up new perspectives, South Tyrolean novels and their historical depth, the poetic spaces of the mountains, and villages in transformation.

An event curated by franzLAB, Eurac Research, and Literatur Lana.
