The Franzensfeste Fortress was built in 1833-39 by the Austrian Emperor Franz I and named after him.

The Franzensfeste Fortress was built in 1833-39 by the Austrian Emperor Franz I and named after him. Even though this defensive structure was never really used for battles, it was still considered to be the strongest fortress in Europe.
