Prague, around 1900. Franz Kafka is torn between the authority of his strict father, the routine of his job at the insurance office, and a quiet longing for artistic fulfilment. Supported by his friend and publisher Max Brod, he tries to find his place in life and in the world of literature.
Polish director Agnieszka Holland creates sensual, surreal images to make Kafka’s inner conflict and extraordinary imagination tangible. She captures both the monotony and confinement of his everyday life as well as the complexity of his character and the multilingual nature of his time.
