Identity. Music from many directions.
"Identity" concerns us all. It polarizes and emotionalizes! Finding one's identity challenges people to define themselves, to differentiate or to integrate into a "we" of a group, especially in times of constant upheaval and rushing events. News about world events spreads globally within seconds. At the same time, something slowly fermenting in our society is breaking out with tremendous energy and affects us all. Cracks, fissures, and gaps are revealing themselves everywhere, placing large question marks before us individually and societally.
Especially prominent are those who turn constructive questions about identification, individuality, and shared values into the opposite, turning them into a divisive "us against them!" Art and culture, on the other hand, give us - often in silence and away from the polarizing media bombardment - the opportunity to experience, listen to, enjoy, and celebrate "our" cultural life together; this is particularly true in the awareness that music of various kinds is identity-defining and pivotal on our paths throughout our lives.
An open perception of one's own identity as a mosaic in constant change of traditions, experiences, memories, and relationships is one of the most important prerequisites for successful coexistence. Seeking and finding identity creates the possibility to encounter others on equal terms. It is the most important key to tolerance, openness, genuine diversity, and coexistence. Reason enough to dedicate a festival to the theme of "identity," and thus celebrate heritage, artistic diversity, and cultural exchange.
