Theatres in general, and opera houses in particular, exist all over the world. Yet only in Italy are they more than just a place of entertainment. If, in the past, people lingered between stages and galleries to get noticed, and in the "ridotti" they discussed politics and gambled, even today theatres remain the fulcrum of civil and cultural - as well as musical - life in every city.
