Antonín Dvořák: Stabat Mater
Antonín Dvorák's impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, choir and orchestra is probably the best-known of the Bohemian composer's sacred works. Dvorák's own painful experiences with the loss of three children are likely to have prompted his preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God under the cross of her son. The work is one of the most moving and successful sacred works in music. Performers in the cathedral are the Haydn Orchestra, the South Tyrolean Vocal Ensemble, the Gürzenich Choir Cologne and four South Tyrolean vocal soloists.
