Der Film geht auf das letzte Drehbuch der beiden
Künstler*innen zurück, das von der neuen Museologie um
Picassos Guernica beeinflusst wurde. Nach Ricci Lucchis
Tod (2018) und Recherchen in seinem umfangreichen Filmarchiv
stellte Gianikian den Film 2023 fertig: Er ist als großes
historisches Fresko konzipiert, in dem das Wandgemälde
Symptom und Zeichen einer katastrophalen Zeit ist.

Il film si basa sull'ultima sceneggiatura dei due artisti,
influenzata dalla nuova museografia intorno a Guernica di Picasso.
Dopo la morte di Ricci Lucchi (2018) e le ricerche nel suo vasto
archivio cinematografico, Gianikian ha completato il film nel 2023:
è concepito come un grande affresco storico in cui il murale è
sintomo e segno di un tempo catastrofico.

The film has its origins in the last script written by the
two artists and is influenced by the new museography around
Picasso's Guernica. After Ricci Lucchi's death in 2018 and
extensive research in his vast film archive, Gianikian completed
the film in 2023: It is conceived as a great historical fresco in
which the mural is the symptom and sign of a catastrophic times.

Es war furchtbar, über den Krieg zu arbeiten, während ein anderer Krieg im Gange ist. Von Ende 2019 bis 2023 wurde der Film Frente a Guernica (Director's Cut) mit unserer analytischen Kamera auf Filmarchiven gedreht. Neun Stunden privates und öffentliches Material. Der deutsche Dokumentarfilm der UFA dokumentiert die Auswirkungen der Bombardierung der Kleinstadt Guernica am 26. April 1937 durch die nationalsozialistische und italienische faschistische Luftwaffe, die Bomben auf die Bevölkerung abwarf. Pablo Picasso erhält am 28. April 1937 einen Auftragsbrief von der republikanischen Regierung Spaniens für ein Werk für die Weltausstellung in Paris. Unserer ist ein Film gegen den atomaren Wahnsinn, den Picasso mit Guernica vorausgesehen hatte.

È stato tremendo lavorare sulla guerra, mentre è in corso un’altra guerra. Dalla fine del 2019 al 2023 si colloca la lavorazione del film Frente a Guernica (Versione integrale) girato con la nostra camera analitica sugli archivi filmici. Nove ore su materiali privati e pubblici. Il documentario tedesco UFA registra gli effetti del bombardamento sulla cittadina di Guernica, il 26 aprile 1937, compiuto dall’aviazione nazista e fascista italiana che scaricavano bombe sulla popolazione. Pablo Picasso, il 28 aprile del 1937, riceve la lettera d’incarico dal governo Repubblicano Spagnolo di un’opera per l’Expo Universale di Parigi. Il nostro è un film contro la follia nucleare, Picasso l’aveva prevista con Guernica.

It was terrible working on the war while another war is being waged. It took from the end of 2019 to 2023 to make the film Frente a Guernica (Director's Cut), shot from the film archives with our analytical camera. Nine hours of private and public materials. A German UFA documentary records the effects of the raids on the town of Guernica carried out on April 26, 1937, by the Nazi and Italian fascist air forces, which dropped their bombs on the population. On April 28, 1937, Pablo Picasso received a letter from the Spanish Republican government of a work for the World’s Fair in Paris. Our is a film against the nuclear madness that Picasso had foreseen with Guernica.
