In Anlehnung an Stefan Zweigs Novelle, in der das
Schachspiel als Mittel zum Überleben des Faschismus dargestellt
wird, erzählt der Film vom Völkermord an den Armenier*innen,
der vom türkischen Staat immer noch bestritten wird.
Pinar Ögˇ renci verwendet Archiv- und Gegenwartsaufnahmen,
um die Traumata aufzudecken.

Liberamente ispirato alla novella di Stefan Zweig, in cui il
gioco degli scacchi è rappresentato come un mezzo per sopravvivere
al fascismo, il film racconta gli eventi del genocidio armeno,
ancora contestato dallo Stato turco. Pinar Ögˇ renci utilizza archivi
e filmati attuali per scoprire i traumi lasciati dal popolo armeno
sul suo paesaggio e sulla sua memoria.

Loosely inspired by Stefan Zweig’s novella, in which playing
chess is depicted as a means of surviving fascism, the film
recounts the events of the Armenian genocide, still contested by
the Turkish state. Pinar Ögˇ renci uses archives and present-day
footage to uncover the traumas left by the Armenian people on
their landscape and their memories.
